THEY’RE ALL TALKING ABOUT IT

Come by 6 to see what everyone’s talking about!

Le Labo’s exclusive collection of city perfumes have arrived in Toronto!

BY PAIGE DZENIS | NOVEMBER 3RD, 2011 | 3:00 PM

Put away that passport! An around the world tour—of fragrance, that is—has arrived in Toronto. Boutique perfumery Le Labo has brought seven of their exclusive city scents to Canadian retailer 6 by Gee Beauty. This world-wide span of scents includes New York’s “Tubereuse 40,” Los Angeles’s “Musc 25,” Paris’s “Vanille 44,” Tokyo’s “Gaiac 10,” London’s “Poivre 23,” Dallas’s “Aldehyde 44,” and Chicago’s “Baie Rose 26” ($294 for 50 ml, $450 for 100ml).

Handcrafted at Le Labo’s headquarters in New York City, the brand prides itself on unique ingredients and distinct formulations. The Tokyo-based scent, for instance, was developed in partnership with perfumer Annick Menardo, and is a “tense formula built on guaiac wood and surrounded by musks.” The London scent’s peppery notes, on the other hand, were crafted with pepper bourbon to give the commonly used spice “what it finally deserves.”

Normally, each fragrance is only available in the city it belongs to—however, to keep the air of exclusivity alive, the City Collection is at 6 by Gee just for the month of November. The only thing left to decide is whether we want to let our travel or scent preferences decide which we buy first!

Five Fall/Winter Perfumes

STYLE  | BY CARLI STEPHENS ROTHMAN | OCTOBER 27, 2011

This week, a woman walked past me wearing Aromatics Elixer. I knew it immediately. One of Clinique’s watermark scents. Long before the cosmetic magnates asked us to do the impossible, just be ‘Happy’, they bottled a puke-yellow melange, one that sprayed strong, and insured your presence was unignorable. A bold and efflorescent patchouli, paired with acute balsamics, it’s a perfume that stings the nostrils and burns the eyes. It sounds foul, but it’s actually one of my favourites.

Although I love it, I was quite surprised to smell it.

Not because few people wear Aromatics, and even fewer since 1996, but because no one has worn Aromatics since the Winter of 1996–and this is only fall. Argue you might, but I’ve always thought scent to be seasonal. When the cold comes, we swap sun-block for stockings, tank tops for tube socks, swimsuits for swing coats. It makes sense, then, to replace light, airy florals with Fougères and gourmands. Here are five winterized scents, designed to beat the freeze and keep you warm all day.

1. Le Labo, Vanille 44 ($225 for 50ml/$450 for 450ml at Gee Beauty, 2 Roxborough St.)
Only for the month of November, Gee Beauty will be selling this most coveted whiff of Paris. With vanilla, an unmistakable hint of mint at the top, and a few subtle notes of bergamot and mandarin just below, this fragrance is woody and transformative. It’s not a “smell me!” scent as much as it is a “did you smell me?” scent. Illusive and sophisticated, understated and sweet, Vanille 44 is perfect for the Snow Queen in disguise.
